Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
If you eat well, stay active, and still have fat that will not budge, you are probably a good candidate. Its really important not to have too much of skin hanging or abdominal panus. Also stretch mark will hinder skin retraction. Liposuction works best when you are within about 30 to 40 pounds of your goal weight and your skin still has decent elasticity. Examples of good candidates are, a 38-year-old mom with stubborn love handles after two pregnancies. A 45-year-old man who works out four days a week but cannot get rid of his belly. A 29-year-old woman who has always carried extra fat on her inner thighs no matter what she does. Those are the patients I see every week at Mira Aesthetic in Costa Mesa, Downey, and Montclair/Rancho Cucamonga. If any of that sounds like you, keep reading.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat from specific areas of your body, mainly the weight loss resistant area, using a thin cannula and gentle suction. It is not a weight loss surgery. It is a body contouring procedure that targets fat deposits that resist diet and exercise.
Think of it this way: your body has a set number of fat cells. When you gain weight, those cells get bigger. When you lose weight, they shrink. But the distribution stays the same. If you have always carried extra fat in your midsection or thighs, diet and cardio will shrink those cells, but they will still be there in the same proportion and the same amount of fat cells.
Liposuction removes those cells permanently. They do not come back. For example, if you have 10,000 fat cells in your abdominal front section, with liposuction we can remove 8,000 of the fat cells. That is total reduction of fat cells. The shape change is structural, not temporary.
Benefits of Liposuction
- Permanent removal of fat cells from targeted areas
- Improved body proportions and contour that diet cannot achieve
- Treats multiple areas in a single session (abdomen, waist, back, thighs, arms, neck, chest for men)
- Can be combined with tummy tuck, BBL, or mommy makeover for more dramatic results
- Short recovery with most patients back to work in 3 to 5 days
- Minimal scarring from small incisions that fade over time
- Results are visible within weeks and continue improving for up to 6 months
Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
This is where I want to be honest with you, because I turn away patients who are not right for this procedure. That saves both of us time and frustration.
Good candidates are within 30 to 40 pounds of their goal weight, in generally good health, and have skin with reasonable elasticity. You also need realistic expectations. Liposuction will reshape your body. It will not make you a different person. Patient selection is very important to achieve a happy outcome. Liposuction does not attend to the lose abdominal muscle separation. If you are proactive after the surgery with exercise and further dieting, the end result will be much better.
Here are the types of patients I see most often:
- Women who had children and cannot get their pre-baby waistline back despite consistent exercise
- Men who work out regularly but carry stubborn belly fat or love handles that will not respond to training
- Patients who lost a significant amount of weight and have isolated pockets of fat remaining
- Women who have always had disproportionately large thighs or upper arms regardless of their overall weight
- Men with excess chest fat (gynecomastia) who want a flatter, more masculine chest
If your main goal is weight loss, this is not the right procedure. I limit fat removal to 5 liters per session for your safety. For patients who need to lose weight first, we offer medical weight loss programs at all three of our locations that can help you get to a healthy starting point. Liposuction surgery is all about sculpting and proportionating unwanted fat.
Liposuction Techniques at Mira Aesthetic
Not every patient needs the same approach. I select the technique based on the treatment area, the amount of fat, your skin quality for retraction, and whether you are combining liposuction with another procedure.
Tumescent Liposuction
Before removing fat, I inject a specialized solution into the treatment area. This reduces bleeding, minimizes bruising, and makes recovery more comfortable. All of my patients receive tumescent liposuction as part of their procedure.
Laser Assisted Liposuction
Laser energy breaks down fat cell membranes before removal. This technique works well for smaller, more precise areas like the chin, neck, and arms. It also provides some skin tightening benefit. This is mainly offered to patients that need more skin retraction.
Vibro-Tumescent Liposuction (My Proprietary Technique)
I developed this method and have trained surgeons worldwide in how to use it. The Vibro-Tumescent technique combines tumescent fluid injection with vibration-assisted fat removal. The vibration allows for smoother, more even fat extraction with less trauma to surrounding tissue. This means less bruising, more precise contouring, and faster recovery. It is exclusively available at Mira Aesthetic.
Lipo 360 in Orange County
Lipo 360 refers to circumferential liposuction, meaning we treat the entire midsection in one session: front abdomen, flanks (love handles), and lower back. Instead of just addressing only the front sections, we sculpt the full circumference of your upper torso for a balanced and proportional result.
This is one of the most popular requests I get, especially from patients who want that defined waistline from every angle. I perform Lipo 360 using my Vibro-Tumescent technique for the smoothest possible outcome.
Liposuction Treatment Areas for Men and Women
For women: abdomen, sides, waist, back, upper arms, inner and outer thighs, hips, buttocks, neck, chin, bra-fat area, and knees.
For men: abdomen, lower back (love handles), chest (gynecomastia), neck, chin, and flanks.
Multiple areas can be treated in a single session. During your consultation, I will examine each area, discuss which ones will give you the biggest visual impact, and help you prioritize if needed.
Why Patients Choose Dr. Mirrafati for Liposuction in Orange County
You have been thinking about liposuction for a while. Maybe you have looked at five different surgeons' websites already. You are comparing prices, reading reviews, and still not sure who to trust with your body.
This is the part most surgeons fill with generic claims. Picking a surgeon for liposuction is a big deal. So let me tell you what sets me and my practice apart. I will give you facts and let you decide.
- Published textbook author: I wrote the textbook on liposuction and body contouring. Not a blog post. A medical textbook that has been published by Springer publishing company, that has been translated into Spanish and is used to train other surgeons. No other liposuction surgeon in Orange County has that credential.
- Inventor of the Vibro-Tumescent technique: I developed this method for smoother fat removal with less tissue trauma. I have trained surgeons worldwide in this technique.
- 30+ years of experience: I have performed thousands of liposuction procedures. The difference between year 5 and year 30 is knowing exactly how much fat to remove and where to leave it so your body looks natural. Knowing the danger zones in liposuction surgery can only be gained by experience and touch sense to know when to stop to avoid denting or scaring the skin.
- 50,000+ patients served: across breast, body, and facial procedures at Mira Aesthetic.
- AAAHC-accredited surgical facility: Our Costa Mesa surgery center meets the same safety standards as a hospital operating room.
- I do your surgery personally: After 30 years and thousands of body contouring procedures, I still personally perform every liposuction surgery at Mira Aesthetic. No associates, no physician assistants doing the work. It is me in the operating room, start to finish.
- Three locations: Costa Mesa (Orange County), Downey (LA County), and Montclair (Inland Empire). Consultations available at all three either in office or via our virtual platform.
- Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery: This is the highest credential in cosmetic surgery, not just a general board certification.
What to Expect During Your Liposuction Procedure
Consultation
We start with a thorough evaluation. I will examine the areas you want treated, check your skin elasticity, review your health history, and give you an assessment of what liposuction can and cannot do for you. If I think another procedure would serve you better, I will tell you. Consultations are free and there is no pressure.
Day of Surgery
Liposuction is performed at our AAAHC-accredited surgical facility in Costa Mesa under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or locally depending on the extent of treatment. Small incisions are placed in discreet locations. I inject tumescent solution, then use the appropriate technique to carefully remove fat while sculpting natural-looking contours. Surgery typically takes 1 to 3 hours depending on the number of areas.
Immediately After
You will wear a compression garment and go home the same day. Someone needs to drive you. You will have prescriptions for pain management and antibiotics.
Client Reviews
Recovery and Downtime After Liposuction
Days 1 to 3: Soreness, swelling, and some bruising. Most patients manage with prescription pain medication for the first day or two, then switch to over-the-counter options.
Days 3 to 5: Many patients return to desk work and light daily activities.
Weeks 2 to 6: You can gradually resume exercise and more physical activity. Compression garments are worn during this period.
Months 1 to 6: Swelling continues to decrease and your final contour emerges. Most patients see about 80% of their result by month 2 and the full result by month 6.
I will see you for follow-up appointments to monitor healing and make sure everything is progressing the way it should.
How Much Does Liposuction Cost in Orange County?
Liposuction pricing depends on several factors, and I would rather explain those honestly than throw out a number that does not apply to your situation. But a range of price runs from $4900 to $8900 for the standard front areas. The biggest variables are:
- Number of treatment areas. First area always cost the most and the price per areas decreased as more areas are done at once.
- Technique used (laser-assisted or Vibro-Tumescent may have different pricing than standard suction-assisted)
- Whether you are combining liposuction with another procedure like a tummy tuck or BBL
- Anesthesia and facility fees
We offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry so you can break the cost into monthly payments. During your free consultation, you will get a personalized quote that covers everything: surgeon fee, anesthesia, facility, garments, and follow-up visits. No hidden charges.

Why Surgeon Experience Matters for Liposuction
Here is something I tell every patient: liposuction is one of the most technique-dependent procedures in cosmetic surgery. Two surgeons can use the exact same equipment and get completely different results. It truly has to do with the surgeon artistic ability and feeling the areas as he or she is doing the liposuction surgery.
The difference is in knowing how much fat to remove, how much to leave, and where to create transitions so everything looks natural. Remove too much and you get divots and irregularities. Remove too little and the patient is disappointed. The margin between a great result and a mediocre one is small, and it comes down to the surgeon's hands and experience.
After writing a textbook on this procedure and performing it for over 30 years, my hands know what the right amount feels like. That is not something you can learn from a weekend course or a one-year fellowship. It takes thousands of cases and years experience.
What Most Patients Don't Realize About Liposuction
Most patients come in focused on how much fat gets removed. I understand that. But the real skill in liposuction is not removal. It is sculpting.
Early in my career, I learned a lesson that changed how I approach every case: aggressive fat removal does not equal a better result. I had a patient who wanted maximum fat taken from her abdomen. On paper, I removed exactly what she asked for. But the result looked hollow and unnatural because I did not leave enough fat in the right places to create smooth transitions.
That experience taught me that liposuction is about balance. You need to remove enough fat to create a visible change, but you also need to leave a precise layer in specific zones so the body looks sculpted, not deflated. It is the difference between a result that looks like you had surgery and one where people just think you look great.
The other thing patients underestimate is the impact of skin quality. If you have significant loose skin or stretch mark, liposuction alone will not give you the result you want. You may need a tummy tuck or skin tightening procedure in addition. I would rather tell you that upfront than have you disappointed later. During your consultation, I will give you an assessment of whether liposuction alone will get you where you want to be.

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting and Non-Surgical Options
Patients often ask me about CoolSculpting and other non-surgical fat reduction options. Here is my honest take.
Non-surgical treatments like CoolSculpting can reduce small pockets of fat by roughly 20 to 25 percent per session. They work well for patients who have a small amount of fat and do not want surgery. But they cannot sculpt. They cannot treat multiple areas in one visit. And the results are modest compared to liposuction.
Liposuction removes 70 to 90 percent of the fat in a treated area in one session. It allows me to sculpt your body in three dimensions, creating waist definition, smooth transitions, and proportional contours that no external device can replicate.
If you have a small stubborn area and are needle-shy, CoolSculpting might be enough. For anything beyond that, liposuction gives you more dramatic, more precise, and more permanent results.
